
LANGLEY, British Columbia – After falling behind 14-0 the No 6 Memorial Sea-Hawks defeated the No. 3 Ottawa Gee-Gees 33-21 in the opening match of the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship Wednesday morning at the. Willoughby Community Park Stadium at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.
Leading the way for the Sea-Hawks was James Clarke with 18 points on two tries and three converts, with Jack McCarthy and Stephen Mallard each adding a try. Scoring for Ottawa were Glenn Roy with three converts, and Graeme Neill Klein, Wade Marshall, and Evan Roy with a try each.
AS IT HAPPENED
Ottawa jumped out to the early 14-0 lead halfway through the first half, on converted tries by Graeme Neill Klein at one minute and Wade Marshal at 13:30l. Memorial responded to the challenge and had two converted tries by James Clarke at 22:10 and Jack McCarthy at 26:50. The Gee-Gees came back and retook the lead with a converted try by Evan Roy as time expired in the opening frame with Ottawa up 21-14.
The Sea-Hawks were dominant in the second half outscoring the Gee-Gees 19-0. Mwaita Makanza started the scoring six minutes in with a converted try. James Clarke followed up with another converted try at 42 minutes before Stephen Mallard finished off the scoring with an unconverted try to make the final 33-21 for Memorial.
UP NEXT
Memorial will now play in the semi-finals against the winner of Queen’s and Victoria. While Ottawa will play against the loser. Both matches will be played on Friday.
